Madison's Birthday

Today is Madison's B-day, she is now 12! Hard to believe. I feel really old today too. I love all three of my daughters, what a blessing to their Dad!

McCain Right on Abortion

Both presidential hopefuls appeared on the platform at Saddleback Church. I really have nothing to say about the event in general. I will say this, it is not likely that these two political candidates will be appearing at FBC Prospect anytime soon.

Anyway, George has a good post that contains an edited video that is worth watching. The question from Rick Warren, posed to both McCain and Obama, was about their view on abortion. Obama did a whole lot of talking but really said nothing worth hearing. Needless to say, McCain is right on abortion.

How are you doing God?

I often pray with my kids at bedtime. I also often forget what a special time it really is. It is quiet and personal. A real blessing, not to be neglected. In addition, it sometimes offers a sweet glimpse into the simple heart of a child. It was that way last night.

My youngest daughter is eight years old and very...how do I say this, she's a pill. She says things that make you laugh and also make you scratch your head. She is a little rascal.

As we began to pray last night I took a moment to provide some gentle instruction about prayer. I am a seminary trained pastor you know, eh hm. I told her to try to avoid saying the same things over again. I further explained that prayer was really just a conversation between us and God. So, she launched into her prayer, slowly at first. I could tell she was struggling to try not to be repetitive. After covering all the regular prayer requests and concerns she was finished, "amen."

Then she said: "I was going to start off with, 'How are you doing God?' but I didn't." Well, that is the way we often begin our conversations isn't it? I told her that would have been okay. But added that God is always fine, because he's God, so we really don't need to ask.

Sometimes I think my kids are not hearing me. Then I realize that often they are, in a kid kind of way. I hope that when I pray I am able to come to my Heavenly Father honestly and simply, trusting that he hears me and cares.

"Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my groaning. Heed the sound of my cry for help, my King and my God, for to You I pray." Ps. 5:1-2

Fireproof - A Movie for your Heart

My wife and I attended a preview showing of the new movie Fireproof. It was made by the same folks that produced The Flywheel and Facing the Giants. Actually, all three movies were produced as a ministry by a church in Georgia. The free screening here in Louisville was sponsored by The Family Foundation. The film will hit theaters nationwide in late September.

This is a movie that will stir you deeply. Its primary message is about love and marriage but, it is not just a movie for married couples. The leading character in the film, played well by Kirk Cameron, is a fireman in a marriage that is being torn apart by self indulgence, pride and stubbornness. These are tendencies we all must battle from time to time. Furthermore, we all have relationships that suffer when we fall into these traps.

The film is honest about sin and its consequences as well as forgiveness and the hope found in Jesus Christ. The gospel is clearly presented in a way that will move your heart. I laughed out loud on several occasions and I cried more than once.

I will be very surprised if the mainstream media even blinks at this movie. However, if Christians get behind this project I will not be surprised if it doesn't do very respectable at the box office. (btw Facing the Giants made $10 million with only $100,000 production budget) Let me encourage you to view the trailer and share this information with others. If you are a pastor you should promote this film to your congregation. We seldom have an opportunity to support a movie that gets nationwide exposure and has such a solid message. Marriage is under attack in our culture and often viewed as a useless and antiquated institution. Anyone that sees this film will never think that way again.
