Remembering Professor Chip Stam

I am a better pastor because of the instruction I had from Chip Stam. He taught me about worship and did so with great emphasis on Scripture. Chip's battle with cancer ended this week as he stepped into the presence of his Savior. It was a blessing to have known him.

The Gospel Coalition has provided a more extensive memorial.

Desire for God's House

A few weeks back the Lord brought an interesting visitor to our church, someone who simply has an interest in gathering with God's people. You see, this individual does not speak English. But, she is a follower of Jesus Christ. So, she continues to come and worship with us.

She smiles, shakes hands with nearly everyone, even hugs a few of the ladies. All the while not understanding much of what is said or able to be understood. I can only assume that she simply has a deep desire to be in a place where she can be among others who are like-minded. She is far from home and her family. But for an hour or so each week she is among 'brothers and sisters.' During the sermon I see her with her eyes closed. She has no idea what the American preacher is saying. But the message comes from the Book, the one that contains the powerful truth of God's grace and love found in the person of Jesus Christ. An amazing message that is so much greater than our human understanding.

In spite of the language barrier, this woman comes to worship. It seems that she simply has a desire for God's house. At the same time there are many professing Christians who allow the least little thing to hinder them from joining with other believers in corporate worship. I am encouraged by this woman's zeal to gather with those who share her faith. A day is coming when there will be a great gathering of people from every tribe and nation. On that day there will be only one language. The language of praise! To the glory of God and the Lamb.

Rested & Relaxed

This is the view off our balcony at the condo we stayed in last week at Seacrest Beach, FL. (A very special thanks to our friends who provided the wonderful accommodations!) That is a very cool fountain in the center of the yard. At night it was lighted and music played as 10-15 kiddos frolicked in the water spouts. Fun stuff. Note the view of the Gulf on the horizon. Great place to have morning coffee!
Here's the pool we spent lots of time in. The best was a 9PM swim. Most of the palm trees have lights on them so after dark it is very fun and much less crowded. The girls had a ball. They are both little 'water dogs.'
Here's a picture of our girls (the 2 on the left) and the Bridges' girls. They took a short break from church planting duties to spend the weekend with us. Great time of fellowship with our friends.
On Sunday we decided to skip 'traditional' church and have our own time of worship. We sang a few hymns/praise songs, prayed and read a couple passages of Scripture. Because we had spent several days playing on the beach and observing the glorious views, we focused our discussion on the grace of God in creation and in providing for us in Christ. God is pleased when we enjoy His creation, especially when we attach the proper focus. In the end, a vacation at the beach can be R & R as well as worship. God is so good!

Worship Quote

"Regardless of what we think or feel, there is no authentic worship of God without a right knowledge of God...[which is found] in the revealed truth of Scripture." Bob Kauflin, Worship Matters, pg. 28

Although in the context of this quotation the author is speaking to worship leaders, I believe it is applicable to all of us.

I'm still "thinking" about the previous post. This quote follows along with the discussion. (Actually, there is no discussion. That would require you to provide input or comments.) So, we press on.

Defining Worship pt. 1

I had a great conversation today with someone about worship. Although we all think we know what the word "worship" means, it can be a bit slippery to nail down. It is certainly a bigger idea than merely "the music at the beginning of our Sunday morning service."

So, what do YOU think? Anyone out there willing to provide a comment to share your idea about the definition of Worship?

I'll think more and write more tomorrow.

Edwards Quote

"What makes men partial in religion is that they seek themselves, and not God, in their religion." Jonathan Edwards, The Religious Affections pg. 316

That's what we do. We seek ourselves, not only in religion, in nearly everything. We are a self-centered lot.

All the more reason to rejoice in the mercy and grace of God. He is so long suffering with his stubborn and stiff-necked children. (Oh that I could be too.)
