About an hour ago my daughter announced her New Year's resolutions. I was a bit surprised, mainly because when I was 10 I didn't do that sort of thing. I have never been one to resolve to "do" or "not do" things starting January 1, at least not out loud. I do believe it is valid to evaluate our lives especially as they relate to the gospel, God's calling on our lives and our conformity to Christ. Having done so we ought to make appropriate adjustments.
I will not announce any resolutions for all the WWW to see. I will however say that, Lord willing, I will continue to write as I sit here "Under the Steeple" and attempt to be relevant and engaging. Those that know me will testify, what you see is what you get. I won't pretend to be some academic hot-shot or theological know-it-all. I am a regular guy, who is a pastor, and family guy that struggles daily and marvels at the grace of God.
In 2007 I will strive to bring glory to my Lord Jesus and love him with my whole heart. The best to you and yours for a wonderful weekend. I'll post again next year!

Reality of Ministry
Today I stood by the bedside of a man who may not live to see the New Year. I spoke with his daughter as she looked up at me through tears. She held tightly to her father's hand. It is times like this that my words fail and my classroom training seems inadequate. I am so grateful that I serve the God of all comforts.
I attempted to share words of encouragement and insights from the truth of God's Word. I prayed. A wise pastor/professor said, "No matter what the crisis, prayer is always a good thing." My heart aches for those who are hurting. Yet, my heart swells at the thought that our God is mighty in the battle. It is at times like this that I find confidence in knowing that I am nothing, and that He is All in All! To God be the Glory.

"What can brown do for you?"
I took a friend's advice and ordered the Expositor's Bible Commentary set. It was a very good deal on Christianbook.com (I paid $119 + shipping for the 12 volume set!).
Speaking of shipping, isn't it amazing what technology has brought to the shipping and distribution industry? I am able to track my package coming from some warehouse in MA. I know this is not interesting or intriguing to most folks, but come on. Here's the current status of my package:

Looks like I'll have my stuff before the weekend. Mankind is making giant leaps in this sort of thing. But, I'll go you one better. This morning I was privileged, by God's grace, to enter into the presence of the King of all Glory. I was able to speak to Him and have confidence that he heard my feeble cries and that he cares! That's way better than UPS.

New Blog in Town
A new blog has just burst on the scene, originating in Western Pennsylvania (although the man behind it is from SA WV). This guy is one of my great friends. I encourage you to check out Jim's new blog, "Abby's Dad." I look forward to stopping by often myself.
Not Just for Kids
My girls got the movie "Cars" for Christmas. Of course we watched it this morning. I am the only one in the family that had not seen it. So, I watched and enjoyed the whole thing. The folks who make these kids movies have figured out that most of the time there are adults in the room too. In order to keep them interested it is good to through in a few nuggets for the grown-ups. Wise move Hollywood (one of the few).
Although there were several nuggets aimed at the big people in "Cars," I found the main thematic statement particularly good. Toward the end of the movie Lightening McQueen intentionally stops before winning the big race for the "Piston Cup" and goes back to check on the senior driver who had spun out. When asked about throwing the race and then passing on a big endorsement deal the little red hot rod shares words of wisdom from his old friend Doc: "It's just an empty cup."
Wow! All the things that we chase after in this life. If we could only get that message early on, wouldn't we be much better off? Actually, the Preacher said it a little better I think. "Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun." Ecc. 2:11
Do you think the producer of "Cars" has read Ecclesiastes? Me neither. Do you think we should tell him?

Spurgeon on Christmas

"I hold it to be one of the greatest absurdities under heaven to think that there is any religion in keeping Christmas-day." Charles H. Spurgeon
In searching for provocative Christmas quotes I ran across this one online. I believe there was much that played into the opinion of Mr. Spurgeon, the religious culture around him of course. At first glance you want to disagree with him don't you? I must say that merely "keeping" Christmas has no spiritual benefit whatsoever. But, as Christians we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, it is proper and right to recognize the miraculous birth of our Savior as well. The incarnation is a vital piece in our theology. However, we gain no merit or improved standing with God by celebrating Christmas. Think of those multitudes that will gather in the coming days for a special church service...probably only the second or third time this year (the others being Easter and Mother's Day). What a mockery they make of the Savior. Let's examine our motives for "keeping" Christmas.

Amazing Movie
I have just watched the trailer for "Amazing Grace," due out in February. It looks like it will be an excellent film. It depicts the life & mission of William Wilberforce as he battled against slavery in England. Additionally, it represents how Wilberforce's life was intertwined with John Newton, the writer of the great hymn.
Blame It On The Big Apple
Poor, little, sheltered, country girl goes from small town KY to the big city and gets swept up in the whirlwind that is NYC. From where I sit here in Kentucky, Miss USA Tara Conner appears to be pretty typical. Except for the fact that her "job" is being a pageant winner [that just slays me].
I suppose this is big news for some, it's all over the media (I prefer my news fair and balanced). I'm posting on this in order to call attention to the facts that seem to be pushed aside in the mainstream press. Why in the world did Tara Conner go "hog wild and pig crazy" in NYC? Because it's what people do. Because it's called having fun. Because she was overwhelmed by the fast life of the big city. While some of that may be true, it would be more accurate to say that Tara Conner has displayed her true nature. It is the fallen sin nature. She is just like everyone else in the fact that she is totally depraved.
I don't know anything about her life, upbringing or spiritual background. But I have been on the same road she is on. I stumbled down that road for nearly 30 years. For Miss Conner she has gotten a "second chance" from Mr. Trump. From an eternal perspective, that's not worth very much. Personally, I was rescued by the amazing grace of Almighty God! I was awakened to the reality of my sin and the truth of Christ as the only way to forgiveness and peace with God.
I suppose it's tough being a pageant queen. However, think about the eternal implications of continuing to seek after the flesh and the fleeting passions of the world. It's only going to get tougher. Mr. Trump may give her a second chance and a Manhattan apartment, but "joy unspeakable" is only available at the Cross!

12 Days Insight
Ok, I know the song about the 12 days of Christmas (as mentioned in a previous post). But, it is obvious that I have not done my homework on the actual history/meaning of the 12 days. I have been alerted that the 12 days really starts on December 25 and ends on January 6, or Epiphany which celebrates the coming of the Magi to visit the Christ child.
Since my good buddy Jim (thanks) called this to my attention I have read a bit more and there is much to learn about Christmas/Christian traditions. And to think that our modern celebrations, shopping, decorations and the like are not in keeping with some 1500 years of Christian history. No shock there! Bottom line: Christmas is about Jesus Christ. The creator coming to live among his creation. The way for sinners to be reconciled to God. The gift of a Savior.
I continue to learn and grow, thankfully.

"When therefore the first spark of a desire after God arises in thy soul, cherish it with all thy care, give all thy heart into it; it is nothing less than a touch of the divine loadstone, that is to draw thee out of the vanity of time, into the riches of eternity. Get up therefore, and follow it as gladly as the wise men of the east followed the star from heaven that appeared to them. It will do for thee as the star did for them, it will lead thee to the birth of Jesus, not in a stable at Bethlehem in Judea, but to the birth of Jesus in the dark centre of thine own soul."

Looking for a Partridge
Unless I missed my guess, and that is entirely possible, today kicks off the whole 12 days of Christmas thing. I'm in luck because directly behind our house is not one but two Pear Trees! Now all I need is a Partridge and I'll be set.
I have heard the story about how the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas, has hidden Christian meanings. If so, I suppose that's great. However, I think we are past hiding our Christianity. It's time we were bold about Christ. Last year I was almost nauseated by all the blabber about saying or not saying "Merry Christmas." Now, the mega-church of those who worship at the retail-bottom-line alter, Wal-Mart is boasting about openly greeting customers with "Merry Christmas." Is that really the point? Although I love to wish people a Merry Christmas, the incarnation of Jesus Christ is more, so much more. The whole holiday is very anti-climactic when you focus solely on the manger and not the life and work of the Messiah. He came that sinful mankind might be reconciled to a Holy God. Not sure if that message is buried in the lyrics of the 12 days song or not. But, it ought to be on the lips of every life that has been transformed by God's grace!

Christmas Quotes
If someone says something especially well, we are obligated to share it. That is why I love to read and share quotes. For the next week or so I will be searching for interesting tidbits that have a Christmas theme. The first is actually a poem, that's okay too.
"The Christ-child lay on Mary's lap,
His hair was like a light.
(Oh weary, weary was the world,
But here is all alright.)
Ah, dearest Jesus, Holy Child,
Make thee bed, soft, undefiled
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber, kept for Thee.
My heart for very joy does leap
My lips no more can silence keep,
I must sing with joyful tongue
That sweetest ancient cradle song."
G. K. Chesterton

Unofficial Statistics
According to my unofficial statistics, there have been exactly three (3) visitors to this site...not including my family/or in-laws.
I am currently seeking the assistance of a major marketing firm to investigate the demographic strategy that will most appeal to my target audience, not.
Actually, I will take the "business as usual" approach. If you visit, please post a comment when you feel inclined. I will make every effort to write articles that are engaging, interesting and truthful.
[Thanks to my fellow SBTS grad "Lestourgeon Online" for the kind words and the props! He's a blogging vet and truly my inspiration. Blog on my brother.]

Reading for Fun

No one is requireing me to read these days. I have no quizes or book reviews to prepare for. Thus, I will read for fun. I have nearly depleted a $50 LifeWay gift card that I used to purchase several books that I will read at my liesure. One of them that I am most anxious to begin is Jesus Blood and Righteousness by Dr. Brian Vickers. I just usually call him "Vick" or "Chief" because I have known him for nearly 40 years. Until we parted ways for college in the early 80's we attended the same church, Randolph Street Baptist in Charleston, WV. Few could have imagined that our paths would cross again in Louisville at Southern Seminary. I praise God for how He has used my childhood friend for the Kingdom. It is a testimony to His providence and sovereignty.

Commencement
Today I walked across the stage in Alumni Chapel at Southern Seminary and received my diploma. One phase in my journey has been completed. It was a long time coming. The acomplishment can only be attributed to Divine grace. During the first week of my seminary studies in 2002 I recall walking across campus in awe of where the Lord had placed me. Now the real work of ministry commences. To God be the Glory!

Lest We Forget

65 Years ago today the United States of America was attacked at Pearl Harbor. There were 2,335 servicemen killed along with 68 civilians. Another 1,178 were wounded. It is proper that we remember that day and the lives that were lost.

Two Moms?
According to the Washington Post, VP Dick Cheney's daughter is having a baby. Normally that would be reason to celebrate. But there is nothing normal about this scenario. Cheney's daughter, Mary, is a homosexual. Although not shocking (little shocks us anymore), this is certainly troubling.
Who is the real loser in this situation? Well, from my vantage point there are several. I am a dad with three daughters. It seems that the biological father is hurt. He will not have an opportunity to be a father. He is cast aside as merely a "donor" in this situation. The child certainly is hurt as well. This child will never have the vital influence of a father. This child will never know, in the truest sense, what a family is. Granted, there are those who live in disjointed, dysfunctional, disorganized homes and fare okay. However, the point here is that these two women have deliberately chosen this path for the child. The two "moms" are impacted by this decision too. This just adds another layer of delusion to their already complicated relationship. While they may consider themselves both mothers and seek to function in this role, they are outside the bounds of God's design for a family. Hence, it will never work. At least not properly. Finally, our society takes yet another hit. Another dent in the structure of the American family.
It is simply not possible to continue to seek the path to destruction, walking contrary to the revealed will of Almighty God, and hope to prosper. As believers we can not stand in silence while all along "the emperor's daughter has no clothes." At the end of the day we must proclaim the gospel as the answer to this and every troubling situation. It is the righteousness of Christ that is required to "clothe" all of us for right living and right standing before a Holy God. Then and only then will families be healed and lives restored.

Quite Quotable
This was taken from a letter dated Aug. 6, 1803 written by Andrew Fuller to his dear friend William Carey missionary to India.
"...let us rather pray for each other, and strengthen each other's hands in the Lord. It is wonderful that God should do anything by such poor grovelling sinners as we are. One thing however is manfested by it, that the work is entirely his own, and if we should reach the kingdom of God at last, it will be by great grace."

Far Greater Than Jewels
As I considered an appropriate post for today Proverbs 31 came to mind. You see, for the last 4 1/2 years I have been immersed in seminary studies and ministry responsibilites. Standing with me in this endeavor has been my awesome wife Lisa. She has worked hard and endured much. There have been challenges as well as victories along the way. My wife has been solid for me. She has provided kind words of encouragement and timely words of exhortation. God has given me a wife who's worth is far greater then jewels! I pay tribute to her and I thank the Lord for bringing us together.

Christ in you, the hope of glory.
One of the best books I have read recently is Tell the Truth by Will Metzger. It was required reading for a seminary class. By the way, I have no more required reading. Metzger suggests two questions that can be effective when dealing with those who have made a profession of faith but may not be genuine possessors of faith. I think these are good questions to ask ourselves from time to time. Here they are: What has Christ done FOR you? and What has Christ done IN you?
Let me challenge you to take time this week to examine your personal experience with the Lord Jesus Christ. Is what you have real? It's good to remind ourselves of what we have, and what we are, 'in Christ!'

Anxiously waiting
Last night the Christmas tree went up at the Cyrus house. I think this is the earliest in years. Usually I am called Scrooge for a week before any decorating happens. The shoe usually fits. But actually, I love Christmas and everything about it. As a kid I was always anxiously waiting for all the Christmas fun.
However, as Christians our perspective ought to be radically different from that of a kid waiting on a new toy. Our gift has already come. Emmanuel, God with us! Certainly, we celebrate the first coming of our Lord Jesus. At the same time we wait expectantly for our returning King. In the meantime, we should live our Christian life incarnationally. We should be Christ to the world. Not just at Christmas time.

The time has come

Ok, here goes. My palms are sweating as I type my first post. Will anyone read my words? Will I have any words worth reading?
My goal, in life and ministry, is to "keep the main thing the main thing." For me that is Christ and His Glory!
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer." Ps. 19:14
